The Earth Element is composed of the Spleen (Yin) and the Stomach (Yang).

According to the generating sequence:

• Earth is the mother of Metal. The Spleen is mother of the Lungs, which is why Spleen-Qi, which forms the Nutritive Qi (Rong Qi or Gu Qi), supplies this Qi to the Lungs so it can be mixed with oxygen and the Gathering Qi (Zong Qi) can be created. • Earth is the grandmother of Water. The Spleen controls the Kidneys. Spleen and Kidneys transform body fluids; the function of the Spleen to transform and transport them is vital for the function of the Kidneys in transformation and excretion of body fluids (Jin Ye).
