The nose in Traditional Chinese Medicine is related to Lungs, with the Yang Ming channels (Stomach and Large Intestine). Being at the centre of the face, it is also related to the Earth element. The nose filters the air during respiration and may suffer from mucus, obstruction, sinusitis and bleeding.
Mucus
Clear, liquid, watery rhinorrhoea
(Cold, allergy). Corresponds to an exterior attack of Wind-Cold.
- Blocked nose

The pathogenic factor penetrates the Tai Yang layer. It blocks the descending of Yang Ming; the energy stagnates.

Yellow and thick
(Pneumonia, bronchitis...) More interior and Heat pattern. The pathogenic factor has penetrated the Yang Ming layer.

Nasal bleeding of internal origin.
Full pattern
- Excess of Liver-Fire: (due to emotions, anger...) Wood expands excessively and attacks Metal.
- Abundant and very red blood
Empty pattern
- Weak Spleen cannot contain the Blood. Bleeds easily.
- Scant blood, fluid and paler.
- Accompanied by abdominal distension, fluid retention, stomach acidity, burning sensation.
- It is necessary to tonify Earth and descend Stomach.
