The nose in Traditional Chinese Medicine is related to Lungs, with the Yang Ming channels (Stomach and Large Intestine). Being at the centre of the face, it is also related to the Earth element. The nose filters the air during respiration and may suffer from mucus, obstruction, sinusitis and bleeding.


Mucus

Clear, liquid, watery rhinorrhoea

(Cold, allergy). Corresponds to an exterior attack of Wind-Cold.

  • Blocked nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chills

The pathogenic factor penetrates the Tai Yang layer. It blocks the descending of Yang Ming; the energy stagnates.

  • Eye congestion
  • Headache and sore throat.

Yellow and thick

(Pneumonia, bronchitis...) More interior and Heat pattern. The pathogenic factor has penetrated the Yang Ming layer.

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Constipation
  • Sweating

Allergy

  • Blocked nose
  • Sneezing
  • Red eyes

Yang Ming (ST) and Shao Yang (GB) cannot descend

Sinusitis

  • Purulent and putrid mucus
  • Inflammation due to infection

Stagnation in Yang Ming and Shao Yang

Nasal polyp

Heat in the Lungs. LU-5, LU-8, LU-10

Nosebleed

Nasal bleeding of internal origin.

Full pattern

  • Excess of Liver-Fire: (due to emotions, anger...) Wood expands excessively and attacks Metal.
  • Abundant and very red blood

Empty pattern

  • Weak Spleen cannot contain the Blood. Bleeds easily.
  • Scant blood, fluid and paler.
  • Accompanied by abdominal distension, fluid retention, stomach acidity, burning sensation.
  • It is necessary to tonify Earth and descend Stomach.
