The Fire element requires special attention since, unlike the other four elements which only have one Yin-Yang pair, this element has two Yin-Yang pairs, that is, there are two Yin organs and two Yang viscera related to this element. In this way, the 12 energetic units are formed and not 10 as one might logically think.
Fire is composed of:
- Minister Fire: Heart (Yin) and Small Intestine (Yang).
- Emperor Fire: Master of Heart or Pericardium (Yin) and Triple Burner (Yang).
According to the generating sequence:
- Fire is the mother of Earth: The Heart is mother of the Spleen. This relationship is fundamental so that Heart-Qi propels the blood and helps the Spleen in its transportation function. The Mother nourishes the son. If Fire weakens, Earth can weaken as well. See: Concurrent Deficiency of Spleen and Heart.
- An excess of Heart-Fire can be transmitted to the Stomach and give excessive appetite due to anxiety and nervousness. See: Excess Fire in Heart and Stomach
According to the controlling sequence:
- Fire is the grandfather of Metal. The Heart controls the Lungs. The Heart governs the blood, the Lungs govern Qi, both nourish and protect the body, Qi depends on blood and blood depends on Qi. See: Heart- and Lung-Qi deficiency.
NOTE: The Emperor Fire, Master of Heart and Triple Burner, have the function of serving, coordinating and protecting the rest of elements and especially the Heart in its capacity as the "Emperor" of the body. The Triple Burner regulates and coordinates all Yang (generative) function and the Master of Heart will perform a regulatory function on the metabolism and conservation of Yin.
- The Master of Heart corresponds to the mental aspect and the Triple Burner corresponds to the sympathetic and parasympathetic system. The energetic economy, both in its main and secondary pathways, will defend the Heart, which needs a protection that wraps around it, thus avoiding its alteration or imbalance.
