Qi Stagnation

Obstruction of Qi flow. Accumulation of energy.

  • Usually occurs with Liver-Qi and to a lesser degree with intestines and Lungs.

Causes

  1. Emotional: anger, sadness, pensiveness
  2. Phlegm, Dampness: environmental or due to internal cause, for example by Spleen-Qi deficiency
  3. Inadequate Diet, for example, accumulation of food in LI
  4. Trauma producing inflammation

Symptoms

  • Pain with sensation of swelling, which improves with movement. See more detail on pain in Bi Syndrome.
  • Oppression and distension
  • Heat
  • Alteration of function in the affected area. Examples:
  • Alteration of function if it affects the Upper Burner (Lungs): shortness of breath, dyspnea, asthma, bronchitis, tiredness, chest pain, cough, chest oppression.
  • Alteration of function if it affects Liver: symptoms of Full-Heat with sensation of globus hystericus in the throat, headache.
  • Alteration of function if it affects Liver and SP/ST (Middle Burner): abdominal and gastric pain, digestive disturbances, swelling, pressure, constipation.
