Also known as Empty-Heat pattern, Yin deficiency. It is a relative heat, lack of nourishment and hydration.
Causes
- Excess of external Yang (Heat) injures Yin. Dehydration (especially in weak individuals).
- Injury from the seven emotions: emotions, stress.
- Excess activity and insufficient rest

Symptoms
- Lack of nourishment: emaciation, dizziness, vertigo, fatigue, exhaustion, weakness.
- Lack of hydration: dryness of skin, hair, mucous membranes and stools.
- Heat in waves, hot flushes. Internal heat rises to the face. Flushing.
- Heat in the five hollows: palms of the hands, soles of the feet and sternum.
- Low-grade afternoon fever: the sensation of heat appears in the late afternoon-evening.
- Sweating with minimal effort.
- Dry mouth and throat.
- Nervousness, restlessness.
- Insomnia of the second hour: falls asleep but wakes repeatedly during the night. Sleep is not restorative.
- Pulse: rapid (heat), fine or weak (empty)
- Tongue: red, dry, thin, soft, without coating and possibly with cracks
