Wei Syndrome

Wei Syndrome

The Wei Syndrome is a condition of weakness, atrophy, paralysis, loss of mobility. Any pathology in which strength, muscle tone, mobility is lost.

The Bi Syndrome manifests with pain, which may be in a limb or scattered throughout the body. The Wei syndrome does not have pain, in principle. It affects the limbs in pairs, both legs, or right leg and arm.

To this day this syndrome refers especially to sequelae of polio. It includes all disorders of weakness or loss of mobility.

It can be of spinal origin, cerebral due to involvement of corticoberebral motor zone. Some examples: Multiple sclerosis, sequelae of hemiplegias, paraplegias. Certain neuropathies of toxic origin, from chemotherapy that disturb mobility, sensitivity, produce rheumatism. Toxic neuropathy due to alcohol. Myotrophias. Parkinson. Patients usually come in late stage, if they come quickly at the beginning, acupuncture is more effective.

It is difficult to treat, requires much effort and constancy.

TODO WEI TRATAR YANG MING. Because it is the channel that carries the most energy and blood. For the upper limb we use LI and for the lower limb ST.

It manifests at the channel level, but from the pathogenic point of view it has to do with Zang Fu. In general it has to do with Zang Fu problems, especially in its manifestation, not necessarily as a result of Zang Fu disorders.

Lungs is the first organ involved. The lung has the function of controlling and diffusing energy, it irrigates the organs and entrails. That is why all Wei originated in the context of febrile diseases have to do with lungs, such as polio.

Liver is the second organ involved. Function of storing blood, of controlling muscles-tendons. Involvement of the liver can generate weakness due to lack of nutrition of muscles-tendons.

Kidney Conservation of Jing, action on bones, spinal and brain marrow. Related to several extraordinary channels (Du Mai, Girdle Vessel).

Spleen - Stomach: organ and entrail that complement each other Yin-Yang. Function of production of energy and blood. Transportation and transformation. If they do not produce energy and blood they facilitate muscle atrophy, due to lack of nutrition. Tendons, muscles and bones need their nutrition and hydration of Qi and Xue, therefore they depend on the transportation and transformation of Spleen-Stomach.

It can be a pattern of fullness or emptiness at the beginning of the disease, but once advanced it is emptiness in all cases.

Heat in Lungs

It is due to attack of toxic heat (febrile diseases). Heat "burns" the Lungs, which lose the function of irrigating, of diffusing energy to the organs and entrails and they dry up, wither.

Symptoms

It begins with fever that can be very high. During or after fever appears paresis (weakness and slight loss of mobility) and paralysis of the limbs. It affects two or four limbs. It is a Full-Heat pattern at the beginning, so there will be thirst, anxiety, agitation, constipation with hard and dry stools, dark and scanty urine. Red tongue with yellow coating. Rapid and fine pulse.

Examples of this case are polio, Guillain-Barré syndrome. If they come to consultation, we send the patient to the hospital. In acupuncture we take care of treating the sequelae.

If you want to do something: Eliminate toxic heat, try to reestablish the function of irrigation, of lung irrigation. But forget it. It may drag something after Western treatment.

Accumulation of Damp-Heat

The cause can be external, due to ambient damp-heat in the home or work. And/or Weak Defensive Qi that allows dampness to penetrate that blocks-obstructs Qi-Blood circulation and muscles and tendons are not nourished.

  • An external attack of cold or heat originally, but if it remains for time within the body it transforms into heat and inflammation arises (red, hot).
  • Food imbalance: excess of proteins, sugar, fats, abuse of alcohol. Type II diabetes.

Blocked Qi-Blood does not reach to nourish the structures. Example: Neuropathies of toxic origin, diabetics, alcoholics.

Symptoms
  • Asthenia.
  • Heaviness.
  • Numbness.
  • Paresis.
  • Paralysis of the limbs, especially the lower limbs.
  • The onset can be sudden, sometimes progressive.
  • Affected limbs sometimes edematous, or swollen.
  • There may be some fever.
  • Chest oppression.
  • Abdominal distension.
  • Urine may be scanty and dark.
  • Tongue coating unmistakable, seborrheic and yellow.
  • Fine and rapid pulse.

Treatment

Strengthen the SP to eliminate dampness and make energy and blood circulate through all channels. SP-5, SP-9. BL-20. It affects the 6 limb channels, use especially Yang Ming, which improves general circulation, do not needle the 12 channels.

Spleen-Stomach Empty

It can be due to weak constitution of S-E. Due to chronic illness of long duration that weakens middle Burner. Or due to severe lack of nutrition.

It is an atrophy and weakness due to lack of nutrition of the structures.

To this weakness can be added dampness that obstructs the circulation of energy and blood. People who gain weight eating little, because they eat poorly. Food feeds and heals.

Symptoms
  • Asthenia and weakness of the limbs (usually all 4).
  • It is progressive, of slow evolution over time.
  • Symptoms worsen up to paralysis.
  • More symptoms of Spleen-Stomach empty: pasty stools, mental and physical asthenia, dull face, fine pulse. Barrier pulse is generally strong, if it is weak it is something to treat.

Examples: multiple sclerosis. Plaque sclerosis. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Treatment

Tonify S-E. BL-20, BL-21, SP-3, SP-6, ST-36, CV-12. Eliminate all food that produces dampness.

Liver-Kidney Empty

  • Constitution, aging, congenital.
  • Physical exhaustion.
  • Injury of 7 passions. The 5 emotions affect Qi Ji and produce fire. Sadness dissolves Qi, fear sinks Qi, anger ascends Qi. Fire burns, it can get to burning leaves.
Symptoms
  • Asthenia,
  • Weakness,
  • The muscle masses atrophy.
  • Paralysis of the lower limbs especially.
  • Progressive onset.
  • Cannot stand for long.
  • There may be dizziness, tinnitus.
  • In young women there will be menstrual disorders: irregularity, amenorrhea.
  • Red tongue, with little coating or no coating.
  • Fine and deep pulse.

Excess walking, of activity, weakens tendons. Standing too much weakens the bones. Lying too much weakens Qi. Excess reading weakens blood. Depression, exercise is essential.

Conventional medicine diseases, the same as in Spleen-Stomach Empty

Treatment
-dd>

Tonify K-L: BL-18, BL-23, GB-39, KI-3, KI-7, LR-8, LR-3.

General Treatment

Especially we use the Yang Ming channels of the hand and foot. Do not needle the 12 channels.

If it is advanced, it is convenient to treat in the first sessions the healthy side, because the affected side is too malnourished. Think about it both vertically and horizontally.

Upper limb
  • LI-15 LI-11 LI-10 LI-4 LI-5 sometimes LI-14.
  • Normally we add 2 points of extraordinary channels TE-5 and SI-3, to reinforce the irrigation from the extraordinary to the main. Yang Wei Mai and Du Mai.
  • If there is extremity neuropathy add points Ba Xie, even Shi Xuan at the tip of the fingers (not all, choose a pair in each session). LU-11 has indication to treat the fingers, with that point all 5 fingers can be treated.
Lower limb

Frequency of stimulation is required. In China they do session every day. Here at minimum every other day, three sessions a week. Constant stimulation triggers self-regulation mechanisms through all the channels.
