Vertigo

Xuan Yun.

Xuan: dazzling, blurred. Yun: dizziness, everything moves. It is the sensation that objects around us are moving. It may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

In Western medicine this symptom may be related to hypertension, brain problem, anemia, inner ear disorders, Meniere's syndrome or anxiety disorders. It may also be a side effect of some drugs.

In Chinese medicine the affected organs are: LR, KI and SP. Brain, head and its orifices. Dizziness and vertigo can be of excess type (energy blockage) or deficiency type (lack of nutrition).

Vertigo due to rising of Liver-Yang or Liver-Fire

The rising of yang or the Liver-Fire blocks the orifices. It is internal wind. Emotional cause.

  • Intense, acute, severe vertigo. Difficulty standing.
  • Irritability, nervousness,
  • Insomnia
  • Red eyes,
  • Headache, sensation of swelling in the head
  • Dry and bitter mouth
  • Tinnitus
  • Red tongue with thin yellow coating. The tongue may tremble.
  • Tense and rapid pulse.


Treatment


Vertigo due to dampness and phlegm

The phlegm/dampness obstructs the orifices of the head. The cause is normally inadequate diet and/or weak Spleen that does not transform properly. Although the underlying cause is a deficiency, this vertigo is of excess type due to accumulation, obstruction.

  • Less severe dizziness, with sensation of heaviness.
  • Heaviness in head and limbs, chest and abdomen
  • Abdominal distension
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting with phlegm
  • Pasty stools
  • Swollen tongue with tooth marks, thick white coating
  • Slippery pulse


Treatment


Vertigo due to Blood stasis

Due to trauma, blow, that generates a hematoma that blocks the circulation of Qi and Blood.

  • Intense dizziness and headache
  • The headache is fixed and can be pointed to with a finger where it hurts.
  • Insomnia
  • Palpitations
  • Tinnitus
  • Normal tongue or if it has been going on for a long time it may be cyanotic, with ecchymotic spots. Normal coating
  • Choppy pulse

Vertigo due to Qi and Blood deficiency

Probably due to Spleen-Qi deficiency

  • Mild, chronic dizziness, instability>
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Palpitations
  • Constipation/ pasty stools
  • Abdominal distension
  • Swollen, pale tongue, with thin coating
  • Weak and fine pulse


Treatment


Vertigo due to Kidney-Essence deficiency

Constitutional. Aging.

  • Mild, chronic dizziness, instability
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Worsening of memory
  • Blurred vision, tinnitus
  • Weakness of lower back and knees
  • Sexual impotence
  • Pale or red tongue, with little coating.
  • Weak, fine and deep pulse
